Summer is one of the most appropriate times of the year to carry out the necessary maintenance stoppages. At Meler, we would like to remind you that our hot melt equipment is designed to facilitate these tasks and achieve productive efficiency for as long as possible.

Industrial maintenance is an essential aspect to guarantee productivity in any sector. It not only influences the durability of equipment, but also has a great economic impact by avoiding risks such as the dreaded line stoppages.

WHAT IS THE IMPACT OF HIGH TEMPERATURES ON WORKING WITH HOT MELT ADHESIVES?

Many companies carry out these overhauls and machine overhauls during the summer months, when staffing levels and production loads are often reduced. But high summer temperatures can have an impact on storage conditions and especially on the performance of some adhesives, such as drying processes.

Our first recommendation would be to always have at hand the adhesive data sheet to correctly adapt Meler equipment to the working conditions. The melting temperature depends on each type of adhesive, but during the summer, some of these adhesives can reach their melting point more quickly. Meler melters allow a total thermal control in addition to the real-time display, so temperature should not be a problem.

WORKING TEMPERATURE APPROX. DEPENDING ON ADHESIVE TYPE

  • PUR (130° C)
  • EVA (160° C)
  • Polyolefins (≥ 180° C)

However, it is important not to neglect the safety regulations on the use of PPE and always bear in mind that clothing must continue to protect technical personnel from the risks associated with high temperatures.

EQUIPMENT DESIGNED FOR PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE

Meler has a deep understanding of the industrial fabric and knows that the life cycle of machinery is extended when maintenance work is carried out frequently and according to a schedule. Preventive maintenance minimises emergencies and, for this reason, our flagship Micron+ melter was designed with an electronic platform capable of turning the melter into an ally for productivity.

1.- Optimisation of daily work through scheduling

Not all work shifts are the same and production needs vary. Micron+ allows scheduling of working modes based on calendars. Working and resting hours can be programmed with great advantages in terms of both adhesive care and energy efficiency. The melter adapts its performance to the specific production needs automatically, giving greater freedom to the technical staff.

2.- Prevention-based maintenance

The Micron+ electronic platform allows alarms to be set according to user-set temperature ranges with minimum and maximum limits. It also provides information on the status of other system components such as applicators or hoses.

If an alarm appears, you can easily access the screen that details the history of warnings, including the reason and the exact time when the alarm was activated, facilitating the resolution of incidents.

3.- Predictive maintenance

One of the mandatory maintenance operations to be performed in hot melt installations is filter replacement.. ased on tests performed by Meler, it is estimated that the change should be performed when the melter has reached 1000 hours of operation. Micron+ has an automatic function that records the hours of operation of the equipment and allows the operator to know when it is time to change the adhesive filter.

The following table summarizes some of the basic indications for correct maintenance of the melter/applicator equipment. These indications are extensively detailed in the manual’s product equipment and are perfectly affordable for any production specialist accustomed to working with machine installations.
